TRT HABER / Planting Process of a 300-Year-Old Olive Tree (Olea europaea) and Rehabilitation of the Milas Mining Site

Rehabilitation activities carried out at the former mining site in the Milas district of Muğla, within the scope of National Afforestation Day, are addressed from technical and statistical perspectives. Within the program, the transplantation of a 300-year-old monumental olive tree (Olea europaea) to the site using scientific methodologies and general afforestation data in the region are examined.

Key Technical Details and Processes

• Academic Supervision: The uprooting and planting processes were conducted under the supervision of academics from the Ankara University Faculty of Agriculture.

• Biological Preparation: Prior to planting, standard root pruning and hormone applications were performed to enhance the adaptation rate.

• Planting Protocol: Pits excavated at twice the volume of the root system were stabilized by filling them with a specially formulated soil mixture.

Operational Statistics and Project Data

• Rehabilitation Area: 576 hectares (The largest single-instance mine rehabilitation project in the history of the Republic).

• Completion Time: 2.5 years.

• Plant Population: Approximately 250,000 plants and saplings in total.

• Observed Development: 60 days post-transplantation, new shoot growth of 10–15 cm was detected in the trees.

Relative Analysis

The rehabilitation rate and vegetation density at the site exhibit high operational efficiency when compared to similar mine reclamation projects in Turkey. In accordance with current protocols, olive trees in newly opened sites are not felled; instead, they are transplanted to rehabilitation areas to ensure biological continuity. Harvesting activities are integrated into the regional economy and sustained by the local population.
