"The period from seed germination to first flowering in trees poses an obstacle for reproductive biology and genetic inheritance studies, representing a significant limitation for traditional breeding programs. In this context, the primary goal of Gen4.Olive is to overcome this constraint. Dr. Mehmet Ulaş, Prof. Dr. Mücahit Taha Özkaya, and Prof. Dr. Köksal Demir have completed the implementation of this project through their active contributions, and the evaluation of the study’s results is still ongoing."
Ankara University, one of the Gen4.Olive partners, plays a pivotal role by implementing an integrated and innovative growth evaluation system to identify optimal protocols for shortening the juvenile phase of trees and understanding the effects of various environmental parameters on olive cultivation.
Under this mission, the university has designed, produced, and installed three distinct Hybrid Fully Automatic Climate-Controlled Cabinet (Hybrid-FAC) pilot prototypes (at ORI facilities). These prototypes utilize solar energy for uninterrupted power supply, a reverse osmosis water purification system, and dosing and EC (Electrical Conductivity)-pH control systems to accelerate the cultivation process by shortening the juvenile phase of olive growth.
The goal of the Hybrid-FAC experimental prototypes is to observe the effects of environmental parameters—such as humidity, CO₂, and lighting—on olive cultivation and the stimulation of rapid growth. Thanks to these cabinets, observations and experiments are conducted with minimal cost and maximum efficiency.
